Bird Dog Field Care Class

Our bird dogs deserve more than we can provide, even in the best of circumstances. Come to the 2024 National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic's Bird Dog Field Care Class and leave with the knowledge, confidence, and equipment to provide the care our K9 companions need to keep them healthy and in the field.

Join Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, Dr. Spoo DACVSMR "The Gun Dog Doc," and our partners at Purina for a hands-on training opportunity to learn proper field care for your bird dogs. Training will cover trauma management, how to treat and prevent conditions ranging from heat stroke to migrating foreign bodies, and how to safely remove your bird dogs from traps encountered in the field. Registration Information:

» Ticket Price: $500 per person

» Class size: 16 students, per session

» Four training sessions options:
» Friday, March 1  |  1pm-5pm
» Saturday, March 2  8am-12pm
» Saturday, March 2  1pm-5pm
» Sunday, March 3  |  9am-1pm

Each registered participant will receive:

Attendees will leave this training seminar as more educated and empowered dog owners, able to address the most common issues our bird dogs are likely to encounter in the field.

» Tailgate Exams

» Heat Stroke

» Hypothermia

» Exertional Rhabdomyolysis

» Hunting the Old Dogs

» Post-Hunt Issues -- diarrhea, anorexia, infectious disease, soreness, etc

Particpants will practice the following on live canines:

» Performing a Tailgate Exam

» Performing an Orthopedic Exam

» Bandaging

» Splinting

» Ear Bandaging

» Eye Flushing

» Eye Medication Administration


Participants will also receive training on canine trap escape during the hands on portion.

The original @GunDogDoc, Dr. Joe Spoo knew from an early age that the only career for him was veterinary medicine. He is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is one of only a handful of such specialists in the world and the only one whose primary focus is hunting dogs. 

For nearly 25 years he has provided information to hunting dog owners through his website GunDogDoc.com and has recently expanded to include courses on field emergencies and first aid.
