Shotgun Showcase 2019 Top-10 Pick:
A highly-reviewed and versatile semiauto that could do double-duty in the duck blind and uplands alike
By Rachel Hoveland
The SL5 is Sauer’s first semiautomatic shotgun. The firearm is based off an inertia action, with a lightweight aluminum frame and chrome-lined barrel that is satin nickel-coated — intentionally designed to eliminate all glossy elements. The semi-beavertail forearm is distinctly wide, and the laser-line grain in the walnut stock is eye-catching, described as “natural camo.”
The modest weight and balance of this shotgun combine for a smooth swing and overall feel. Reviews drew attention to the beautiful wood and larger forearm, giving the firearm some of the highest ratings of the day for Style and Function: “Traditionally I don’t wander from over-unders for upland hunting, but for this gun I could make an exception … this is the best-looking auto loader I have ever seen!”
Includes five flush choke tubes. Available in 12-gauge with a 28-inch or 30-inch barrel.
