Tjiekie, owned by Pheasants Forever member Jimmy Warren of Colorado Springs, is a Drentsche Patrijshond - a versatile spaniel-type hunting dog from the Dutch province of Drenthe that began appearing around the 16th century in the Netherlands.

The Drent is a proportionally built, medium sized bird dog originally bred as a versatile farm and hunting companion. It is considered one of the rarest pointing dogs in North America. "We love hunting for pheasants, chukar, and quail in Colorado and Kansas," said Warren.

Pheasants Forever members Kevin and Ashley Stack and their hunting companion, Meadow, hail from Erie, Pennsylvania. At six months old, this photo was taken right before Meadow's first pheasant hunt!

"She flushed and retrieved two pheasants on this hunt and has shown steady improvement with her field work ever since," said Ashley.

What a stunning photo of Meadow the English Springer Spaniel!

Pheasants Forever member Patrick Sullivan and his field companion, Bagheera, helped each other rediscover a passion for the uplands in Iowa.

"I haven't hunted since I was in my 20's, but now, nearing sixty, came into possession of the most amazing dog I've ever owned. Smart, eager, and full of energy," said Sullivan. "He reignited my passion for the uplands, and I helped him overcome gun shyness as a puppy. This is us with our last pheasant from the 2020 season!"

The most difficult part of dog ownership? Saying goodbye.

Chief, a 2-year-old GSP, was called home to his loving creator in early February after a tragic accident with a vehicle.

With his undocked tail and bird crazy personality, Chief ignited a passion for the uplands in his owners, Nick and Kati Arens, who also learned the deeper meaning of affection from their pup.

"A loving and gentle dog, his favorite days were spent chasing upland birds throughout the Midwest. His passing has left a gaping hole in the lives of his family, and he will be forever missed. We love you so much little buddy." ~Nick & Kati Arens

This is Buck, the cutest 12-week-old bird dog we've ever witnessed.

On his first trip to the coast of Washington State, Buck excavated a hole the size of a sand quarry during his visit to the beach - life skills for digging roosters out of heavy cover!

His owner, Chad Harvey, regional representative for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever in Montana/Washington, reports this bird dog in training has discovered that the world is his oyster.

Let'er buck, Buck!

Pheasants Forever member Seth Lothspeich and his Labrador team, Crosby and Mac, found hunting success this past fall in North Dakota. The trio hail from the city of Bismarck.

"I am relatively new to upland hunting and have enjoyed our time in the field, while also learning about and engaging with Pheasants Forever," wrote Lothspeich in an email. "These dogs love roaming the big open prairies of the Dakotas!"

On a side note, Crosby is the #3 Big Air Dock Diving Labrador in the world - we look forward to a future meeting with this team at National Pheasant Fest!

Upland enthusiast Sean Carr and his four-legged hunting partner, Josie, hail from Washington State. They enjoyed a phenomenal upland season together in the state's eastern corridor chasing Hungarian partridge, quail, chukar, and these snowy morning roosters harvested over staunch points a few weeks back!

"Josie enjoyed hunting in the snow this morning; the pheasants, not so much. Solid bird numbers and outstanding dog work all contributed to a memorable 2020/2021 season," stated Carr.

Kent Reierson and one-year-old Zoey, the English Cocker Spaniel, found great upland success this fall on their only snow hunt of the season.

"I snapped this photo in October 2020 in our home territory of North Dakota," said Reierson. "The snow was only around for a short while, which is unusual, but we used it to our advantage on this memorable outing."

Pheasants Forever member Matthew Acker and his crew of German Shorthaired Pointers - Diesel and Tikka - made short work of this early-season limit of roosters in Big Sky country.

"Montana public access lands in October are hard to beat for uplanders," said Acker. "The 'good old days' come to mind on an outing like this when birds are abundant and dog work is steady."

"I've gotten a lot of miles in with this dog during our first full season," said Heidenwirth. "Both CJ and I are excited for the snow and ready to hit the fields hard over the last two weeks of Iowa's pheasant season. Our birds are numerous and looking healthy this year!"

North Dakota Rooster Booster member Bryan Lind has seen Layla start to slow down at the ripe old age of 12, but her passion for upland hunting still burns strong.

"This picture was taken after a good five miles of walking; it was well-earned," reported Lind. "Over our 12-year relationship, we have not missed a single season of chasing the uplands together. I know our shared seasons are getting shorter by the day, but when the shotgun comes out, she turns into a 4-year-old at heart."

Thanks for the email Bryan, it's looks like a life well lived. And for that, we can all be grateful.

At 13 years old with an amputated foreleg in March 2020 due to a soft tissue sarcoma, Hunter’s owner didn’t know if the duo would ever seen the uplands again. A sobering day.

“At that age and with only three legs, pheasant cover seemed like a tall order,” said Hunter’s owner, Richard Wong of Minneapolis. “But the fire was still there.”

Abby Forrest from Aberdeen, South Dakota is a trap shooter, avid pheasant hunter, and dedicated Pheasants Forever member. But most of all, a dog lover.

So, you can imagine the emotion of her family members, Kelly and Casey Weismantel, when Abby surprised them with senior pictures dressed in upland gear and squeezing her beloved bird dog, Luna, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.

“We are so proud of Abby and enjoy watching this duo take to the fields each fall,” stated Casey Weismantel. Abby has been very supportive of Pheasants Forever and is always a friendly face at National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic representing HuntFishSD.

This is Zenobia, a yellow lab owned by Isaac Full, a Pheasants Forever Farm Bill Biologist who hails from Gettysburg, South Dakota. At just under a year of age, this was the pup’s third rooster retrieve on the shores of Lake Oahe for the state’s resident-only pheasant opener.

“She’s as hungry for roosters as I am,” reports Full, who spends the majority of his year putting quality habitat on the ground through private/public partnerships in order to enjoy the fruits of his labor during bird season.

Pheasants Forever member Al Webster and his French Brittany, “Pads,” hail from North Dakota where the duo chase roosters, sharpies, and Huns throughout the autumn months.

“This was Pads’ first solo limit of roosters with four excellent points,” reports Webster. “Three perfect downed bird finds and to top it off, a wing-shot Hun that she tracked into a second covey before pointing. At seven months and one day of age, she did well that day and the future for her looks bright.”

Pads lineage is out of Windy Acres Kennel in Napoleon, North Dakota.

Owned by Pheasants Forever member Jeff Anderson, Toby is a two-year-old English Pointer who celebrated his recent birthday with a training session where this picture was taken.

“He runs very hard, locks up on birds, and does not move until released,” shared Anderson. “I bought him from Hackberry Kennels in Shelby, Iowa and could not be more pleased with his progress. Training has been great, but not nearly as gratifying as watching him do his stuff in the field for wild roosters.”
