By Tom Carpenter

Nobody wants to wish away summer. Well, if you are an upland bird hunter, maybe a little bit.

For Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever members, there is always one sign that the promise of a new hunting season is on the foreseeable horizon: The annual cover reveal of our much-anticipated annual dual edition, the Upland Bird Hunting Super Issue.

For the issue, I put a few words together that pale to the magic of this year’s art:

Bird dog at work. Gamebirds in the air. Hunter swinging shotgun. Such imagery feeds conscious souls. But what about that which resides deeper within? Bob White’s cover painting for this year’s Upland Bird Hunting Super Issue evokes such stirrings. The salmony-soft glow of a setting sun reflecting back from the tail of an overcast that all day hid the high-blue sky of our dreams. The harsh reality of raggedy clouds escorting said front off the prairie. Grass and shrubs and land aglow with both the texture of now and the promise of tomorrow. The swells and troughs of grassland Edens both big and small that still exist and can increase on the land, but that rely on you and your commitment to The Habitat Organization to have that tomorrow.

If you are a current Pheasants Forever or Quail Forever Member, you are on the list to receive this year’s Upland Bird Hunting Super Issue. If your membership has lapsed and you need to renew, or you need to join outright, do it now:

RENEW OR SIGN UP BY JULY 6 to assure you get on the list for this issue, which will mail right around the first of August.

What else can you expect in this issue, every year the upland world’s biggest and, might we offer, best? Here are a few images and a teaser list.

*You’ll have to get the magazine to see, but the cover painting is actually a wider image with a special twist, and it leads the story Sharptails of the Northern Plains.

*Public land hunting is the common theme you will see running through the book, from Chad Love’s important lead feature Forever Public, outlining PF and QF’s (and your) critical role in making public places to hunt upland birds, to The Uplander’s Complete Guide to Public Access Hunting Lands, profiling detailing 16 top upland bird hunting states, 103 public land opportunities and access programs, and 163 million+ acres we can all hunt.

*A GROUSE WEST trio of tales revealing the how, why and where for public-land sage grouse, dusky grouse and mountain ruffed grouse.

*Pheasant coverage from memoirs such as Hunting the Tracks to how-to’s like The Wind in the Willows.

*Quail stories from how-to’s such as Questions to Ask to a sure-to-be-classic essay, Rolling the Dice on a Gambel’s.

*Our complete guide to Grilling Gamebirds, and then tips for getting any trophy upland bird to the taxidermist right.

*Great gear coverage from our annual Shotgun Showcase to our Well Loved Gear feature that profiles 16 items to help round out your upland kit.

That’s not even all of it across 168 action-packed pages. Don’t miss out:
