OREGON—TOUGHER YEAR IN MALHEUR COUNTY
Forecast: The Oregon pheasant season forecast is a bit tricky to parse. Overall, according to the results of 943 miles of roadside surveys in July and August, pheasant numbers are down 26 percent from last year and 5 percent below the 10-year average.

But that’s only part of the story, says Dave Budeau, upland game bird coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Most of the decline was due to low counts in Malheur County, normally one of the state’s best pheasant areas.

Elsewhere, such as the Columbia Basin, pheasant numbers are similar to last year or even slightly better.

Despite near-normal precipitation during fall and winter, many areas of the state continue to claw back from the effects of prolonged drought, says Budeau. And, he says, “Suitable habitat continues to be whittled away by changes in land use.”
